BRICS : Rewriting the Rules of Growth
As BRICS expands into a multipolar coalition of emerging countries, its member states face the challenge of transforming financial cooperation into tangible and sustainable development outcomes.
With new countries joining the BRICS+ framework, including Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the UAE, the organization now spans regions with vastly different economic systems and governance structures. While nations within this organization increasingly invest in alternative financial institutions and South-South infrastructure partnerships, questions about sustainable debt and transparency still raise concerns.
Against the backdrop of a shifting global economy, the coalition must effectively coordinate fiscal and monetary policies, whilst reducing dependence on Western-led institutions, and promoting balanced, sustainable development across member states. This requires reconciling the economic ambitions of dominant powers with the infrastructural and social needs of smaller emerging economies, all while navigating the geopolitical tensions that shape goals and trade investment.
Debate Focus: To what extent can BRICS+ serve as a vable alternative to Western-led financial institutions?
